Hopefully Boxee can optimize the software to better handle thumbnail cache loading and add further view modes in the future. So I think that's everything covered, keep in mind you only have two ways of viewing the photos, there is no giant wall of photos only the 2 rows of 5 photos though it does make it very comfortable to browse through.

* Thumbnails are also not generated for folders with the 1.0 software the 0.9 PC version used to do this. * The thumbnail data is clearly cached by the Boxee Box so the source of the media makes no apparent difference. * The actual thumbnail generation process on first time reading the media is done in the background on multiple files, its fairly quick taking 2-3 seconds in batches however you will notice slowdowns while trying to browse at the same time so it's best left to do its thing first. Viewing speed when actually looking at the photos and going back and forth between them was fast. In general if you only browse/scroll through each row one or two at a time with a large number of photos in one folder you'll never notice anything but scrolling quickly through large collections you will encounter GUI slowdown as your browsing faster than it can load in the cached data in the background. The reload is only about 1-2 seconds however the much more noticeable effect is the slowdown in scrolling. USB/UPnP/SMB – It does not matter how big your overall collection is but I would say with approximately 50 photos in a folder you can scroll quickly between them all without any slowdowns or cache refresh, however go over that number and the Boxee Box will have to reload thumbnail cache as you scroll through. 2 Im willing to bet the boxee box will be able to play more video files and higher res files.

The difference between the “Photo” section and the “local/network” section is that with photos you get a large thumbnail mode of two rows by 5 on the TV whereas the other section simply shows a list of all files within the folder so only one thumbnail is shown at a time.īrowsing by local/network source (list mode only available) The Boxee Box has only two ways of browsing photos either through the global “Photo” section where anything tagged as photos appears or just through the local/network media source section where any network shares, UPnP servers or USB drives are listed. Okay did some tests so here are the results, I tested through USB flash drive, from UPnP server and from SMB network share (gigbit ethernet).
